AFN Named to Supply & Demand Chain Executive’s SDCE 100 Top Supply Chain Projects

AFN Named to Supply & Demand Chain Executive’s SDCE 100 Top Supply Chain Projects for 2018

AFN is honored to announce that we have been selected by Supply & Demand Chain Executive for the SDCE 100 Top Supply Chain Projects award for a sixth year. AFN was recognized for our work to develop a strategic partnership with our client and implement a holistic transportation solution that continues to drive visibility, efficiencies, scalability, standardization and reduced costs. Our recognition as an SDCE 100 Top Supply Chain Projects follows AFN’s recent recognition as one of Food Logistics’ Top Green Providers.

AFN’s client looked to build on its 50-year legacy with new, scalable growth, which presented a variety of opportunities and challenges, particularly those related to its approach to transportation and logistics. Prior to our work, the client was operating in a data-poor environment with little to no shipment visibility due to its lack of a Transportation Management System (TMS) and decentralized operations environment. To help improve our client’s supply chain, our team proposed a holistic, Managed Transportation Services solution.

This solution included:

  • Implementation a TMS to drive visibility, scalability, and data reporting
  • Standardization of transportation processes across all facilities to create efficiencies, streamline processes, and reduce costs
  • Deployment of a dedicated support team to manage change for continuous improvement and growth.

Once AFN’s Managed Transportation solution was in place, our client realized immediate savings through the following:

  • Active carrier management through the new TMS provided the data necessary for determining which carriers to retain and which to remove, ensuring the optimal balance of cost and service.
  • Data capture and analysis allowed the client to adjust shipment pricing on a per-customer basis depending on service levels desired by their customers.
  • Identification of consistent, predictable lanes where a lower-cost, lower transit time carrier could be utilized made it possible to optimize the client’s freight shipping between branches.
  • Shipment visibility increased and the AFN team identified other supply chain challenges, previously unbeknownst to the client. Our team implemented processes to solve these challenges and create efficiencies in the client’s supply chain.

Ultimately, the AFN team reduced the client’s overall transportation costs by approximately 15%. Our client continues to see savings and benefits as we continue to identify and collaborate on solving other supply chain challenges.

AFN Named to Food Logistics’ Top Green Providers List for Seventh Consecutive Year

AFN Named to Food Logistics’  Top Green Providers List for Seventh Consecutive Year

AFN is proud to announce that we have been named to the Food Logistics’  Top Green Providers list for the seventh consecutive year. This honor was presented in recognition of a unique, holistic supply chain solution created for our client, a third generation family-owned and operated fresh and frozen products company.

Prior to AFN’s solution, our client was experiencing a variety of challenges with their incumbent carrier base, including missed pick-ups and deliveries, lack of visibility to shipments in transit, and loads being refused by the consignee due to temperature control issues. These inefficiencies presented an opportunity for a more cost-effective and sustainable solution.

Our solution proposed shipment consolidation to create efficiencies and reduce costs, and the implementation of standardized temperature gauges to maintain the integrity of the client’s cold chain. Once the solution was implemented and had run over an eight month period, our client saw a significant reduction in total miles travelled and number of trucks on the road, a smaller CO2 footprint, and a decreased amount of loads refused at the consignee.

Mileage savings and CO2 emission reductions were measured by comparing the number of miles driven and trucks utilized prior to the implementation of AFN’s consolidation program versus after the solution had run for the eight month period. Ultimately, AFN helped the client to realize CO2 emission savings of 51.15 tons and reduced mileage by 41.69% (24,318 miles).

AFN Celebrates International Women’s Day and the #Press For Progress

217 years.

That’s how long it will take, according to the latest Global Gender Gap Report, for women to reach parity in terms of economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.

217 years.

That’s an awfully long time- and, since I am sharing troubling facts, allow me to go a step further and point out that global progress towards this measure is actually regressing. Last year’s Global Gender Gap Report estimated it would take “only” 170 years to close the gap.

Now allow me to share the good news: it need not be this way. We possess the power to reverse this trend, and begin making forward progress towards equal pay, opportunity, education and empowerment. It is for these reasons that AFN strongly supports International Women’s Day and the push to #PressForProgress.

How do we do it?

First and foremost, there is no gender pay gap at AFN. Men and women are compensated equally. That’s huge, though in all honesty, it shouldn’t be. That men and women deserve equal pay for equal work should be a given, but again, in too many organizations, this is not yet the reality.

The logistics and supply chain industry has traditionally been a male-dominated profession, both in terms of recruitment and advancement. AFN’s workforce reflects this reality. Our talented and dedicated team is comprised of approximately 32% women and 68% men. That’s why AFN created academic scholarships specifically for young women entering the logistics and supply chain field.

This year, we have planned a full week of IWD events, including a breakfast bash, guest speakers, and a happy hour, to celebrate the talented women in our organization and to raise awareness of the pressing need for parity in terms of opportunities, advancement, and compensation. We have invited our team members and our customers and carriers to share shout outs recognizing the women in our respective organizations that make a difference. We invite you as well to recognize women in your life that are helping to #Press For Progress. We want to give them the gratitude and appreciation they deserve.

This is just a start. There is so much more work yet to be done. But together, we can truly press the “fast forward” button on the march to equality. In fact, we must. Because 217 years is far too long to wait.

The Best in Biz Awards are an independent business awards program judged by prominent editors and reporters from top-tier publications in North America. AFN’s second consecutive win is a result of a year of strong growth in team members, volume, and revenue, in addition to the launch of new proprietary technology tools, and the implementation of initiatives supporting diversity in the logistics field.

Each year, Best in Biz Awards’ entrants span a wide spectrum, from some of the most innovative local start-ups to the most recognizable global brands. The seventh annual program was particularly hotly contested, with more than 650 entries from an impressive array of public and private companies of all sizes and from a variety of industries and geographic regions in the U.S. and Canada.

“This award is a testament first and foremost to AFN’s amazing and talented team members. They make our organization a best place to work every day through their shared commitment to our unique culture and our purpose of continuously improving lives through supply chain solutions,” commented Owen Schnaper, AFN’s president.

AFN Honors 2014 Employees of the Year

At AFN, we’ve long been convinced that our people set us apart from the competition. Believing that happy employees lead to overall better business results, we’ve developed a rich tradition of celebrating hard work that goes “above and beyond” the call of duty. We even list rewarding excellence as one of our core values and have developed a comprehensive recognition program where individuals can be singled out for achievements by their peers as well as by management. The annual culmination of that program, and arguably the most coveted nomination, is the “Employee of the Year” award.AFN Honors 2014 Employees of the Year! #PoweringYourWin Click To Tweet

This year, over 50% of our employees were nominated by their colleagues for having gone above and beyond, producing extraordinary work, and/or living the AFN Values consistently throughout 2014. They are “All In”, as we like to say. Although everyone performed extraordinarily, three individuals ultimately stood out above the rest. Here – in their coworkers’ words – you can read why these three earned the “Employee of the Year” honor.

Zack – MVP Brokerage

“I had little experience working with him before adding accounts to my portfolio in late March. Since then, I have been impressed by his drive to seek out new business opportunities as well as his interest in understanding not only Operations processes but our customers as well, using the knowledge gained to target potential new business strategically. His promotion to Team 4 came as no surprise and he has not disappointed in his performance since. I look forward to what he has lined up in 2015 to reshape not just his business, but AFN’s as well.” – Operations Manager

“He is an ‘All IN’ team player. He has done a great job booking loads in order to reach his goal of moving up to Team 4. He is on top of his game every day; he comes in with a smile and leaves with a smile. There has not been a day when I have seen him in a bad mood. He is doing an excellent job. I believe he deserves an ‘Employee of the Year’ award.” – Logistics Coordinator

“In his new role as a Team 4 Carrier Sales Representative, he has demonstrated what it means to be aligned with AFN’s mission and strategy. By building a balanced portfolio, proactively prospecting carriers and bringing capacity to Sales, working hard to develop his assistant, building strong cross-functional relationships throughout the business and laying out a clear strategy and long-term plan for his business, he is a role model for building success for both himself, his team and AFN. He understands what it means for everyone to win and he is committed to delivering results for not only himself and his team, but also for AFN. Zack’s professionalism, his good-natured optimism, his adaptability, his coaching ability, his leadership, his tenacity and his unwavering passion are the true hallmarks of an ‘Employee of the Year’.” – Executive

Diana – MVP G&A

“She is an exceptional part of the AFN family. She is always here on time and does not go home until everything is done for the day. There have been times when she signs in from home on the weekends to check and finish whatever has to be done. She is an ‘ALL IN’ player with a positive attitude. I believe she deserves the ‘Employee of the Year’ award.
– Logistics Coordinator

“She really has mastered her craft. She is passionate about what she does and goes above and beyond on a daily basis to make sure that nothing gets neglected. A true ‘All Star’ member of AFN.” – Sales Rep

“She defines going above and beyond. She is always at work following up on whatever is needed of her. She does a lot of important behind the scenes work to keep our loads safe and secure. So much of what she does is last minute, and she always does it with a smile. She has so much ‘off the top of her head’ knowledge about AFN. She makes it her job to know the answer to questions that fall outside of her job description so she is always prepared. She also knows so much about our customers and helps make so many loads successful because she lays the groundwork for the loads.
She is always ready to offer everyone a trick or a tip on using our systems. A lot of what I know is because she took the time to explain to me how our devices work, customer requirements, gave me the ‘heads up’ on certain loads, and, in general, showed me how our company runs. I appreciate her and her hard work!” – Logistics Coordinator Manager

Emma – Rookie of the Year

“She has been a great asset to operations since she has started, and you could tell from the get-go that she has a good head on her shoulders. She picked things up very quickly and did a great job managing her accounts at their busiest times, all while maintaining a positive attitude.” – Operations Specialist

“She came into the busiest team in the building and did not miss a beat. She stepped right in and immediately provided support and bandwidth to get things done. She is very proactive and is constantly asking to learn new accounts.” – Executive

“She hit the ground running when she arrived at AFN. She is an absolute sponge and absorbs knowledge very fast. Every task is thought through to the end and she truly owns all of her responsibilities. She is a rock star.” – Sales Rep

At the Top of Their Game in 2013

Congratulations to the AFN Employees of the Year

In 2013, AFN celebrated a milestone: ten years in business with a promising outlook for the future.  Determined to continue the upward trend, we hit the ground running in 2013 and made it across the finish line with the wind at our backs.  Our people are what separate us from our competition and allow us to pull together as a team.  That’s why we focus all of our hiring and retention efforts on people who are a good fit with our core set of values, including “teamwork”’.  Other values stress integrity, continuous improvement, and a priority focus on client needs.  All AFN employees exemplify these values, but each year we collectively single out three who have made a particularly remarkable impact on the business.  Nominated and selected by their colleagues, you can read why they were chosen as “Employee of the Year” below.Congrats to AFN Employees of the Year! Andrew – Carrier Sales Manager Lead

Employee of the Year - Andrew, Lead Carrier Sales manager “Andrew represents what this place is all about: determination, hard work, and success. He has proven to be a phenomenal influence on carrier sales and is always willing to lend a hand.”
“He has done an incredible job transitioning from Carrier Sales to management and that ultimately has a direct correlation with how those under his team perform. Through his knowledge and understanding of Carrier Sales, many others along with myself, have learned a great deal about how to better build a book of business. I have seen countless days in which he would arrive before others and put in hours well beyond everyone else to resolve issues and assignments in order to be in a strategic place for the next workday. I believe anyone can become better at their job by having Andrew as a manager and become much more efficient and proactive with time management and critical thinking abilities in order to take action without hesitating. So, without question, he lives the AFN Values. He goes above and beyond, and does extraordinary work to go the extra mile.”
“I hear nothing but positive comments surrounding Andrew. I always look forward to an opportunity to work with him. His knowledge of the business and great attitude make him a key member of the AFN team.”

David – Business Intelligence Analyst

Employee of the Year - David, BI Analyst “David has quietly grown into a dependable and creative resource on the BI side of the business. He tries to see things from the eyes of our customers and our customer reps, and customizes reports that are requested of him in ways that further benefit the outcome of any given project. David’s attitude is always ‘All In’.”
“David had been a shining example of someone who has stepped up to the plate in a tremendous way. He was a critical part to the formation of the group and continued to excel in his role as the year continued. He has been instrumental in creating presentations for new and existing customers and has been very busy working through bids as the year winds down. David goes above and beyond to complete his work on time and to the best of his ability.”
“Always makes time to collaborate and work with the floor.”

Brian – Carrier Sales Representative

Employee of the Year - Brian, Carrier Sales “I can’t say I know Brian very well but his work ethic is noticeable even from afar. From the moment he hit the floor, it was obvious he has what it takes to succeed in an intense environment. From making calls to recovering tough loads, it appears to me as though he has had a great start and is only poised for more success moving forward.”
“Brian got onto the floor and immediately started killing it and has been on a tear ever since. His talk time is always among the highest on the floor and he’s servicing the accounts very well. Very hard worker who deserves recognition.”
“Brian, aka ‘the hardest working man at AFN’.”

Congratulations, Andrew, David and Brian!
